Note: Woven cotton carpets or Durries display vivid imagination and sensitivity to aesthetics. These cool and attractive floor coverings are woven in many parts of the country.
Durrie weaving is the interlacing of a set of vertical threads i.e. warp with a set of horizontal threads i.e. weft.
Durries are always weft-faced, i.e. the warps are never visible except at the fringes because they are completely covered by the wefts.
In its simplest form, durries are a weft-faced plain 'tabby' weave.
The design, size and structure of the durries varies according to whether they are bedside durries, prayer durries, room durries, festival or palace durries.
Durries are produced on a wide scale in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, in attractive shades sometimes with contrasting colour borders and figurative elements such as mosque, minarets, Hindu shrines, oil lamps etc. The designs are geometric, floral or even tribal.
