This is an inlay where a burnished copper, silver, gold or bronze wire is set in wood to create fine geometric as well as floral compositions.
The process involves glueing a paper design on to a plain dark ‘shisham’ surface on which the inlay is to be done. The outline of the design is incised into the wood with a chisel. From a sheet of brass, 2mm ribbons are cut and placed in the edge in an incised line and hammered until they are flushed with the surface. The surface is finally polished and varnished.
Articles like boxes, table tops, trays, wall decorations, lamps and several innovative articles of everyday use make this a much appreciated handicraft.
