Tarkashi Kam

Craftsmen : Ram Singh Kumavat
The metal inlay work known as tarkashi originated in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh.
Firstly the wooden object is engraved or chiselled in a particular manner, so that when the 'wire' or 'shaped motifs' are beaten in, they are held down in the groove. Many metals have been used but today it is brass that is popular. Originally the use of this art was confined to decorate wooden footwear, traditionally worn in homes, as leather was not considered clean. In recent years, this technique is being increasingly used for furniture decoration or in panels and pictures depicting panoramic scenes which can be most attractive.
